Nel Duarte - The Heart that Holds the Pen
Silenced Voice, Shaped in Words
Between Two Cultures
And here I am—a publicist with a soul divided between Colombia and Canada, two lands I carry in my heart, both of which have left deep marks on the way I understand life. I grew up between two cultures, learning to move naturally between the warm realism of my Latin roots and the precise structure of life in the North. I’ve always been fascinated by the power of stories—the ones told with words, with images, with silences. Maybe that’s why I chose to study Advertising: because I love translating ideas into experiences that touch deep emotions and linger in the memory of those who receive them.
Life in the Air
But life, with its whimsical touch, had a surprise in store for me. I left behind creativity and colour to face a much harsher reality: I worked as an Intensive Care Flight Paramedic. Nothing grounds you more than witnessing firsthand how fragile—and how strong—the human being can be at the same time. I spent years in the air, accompanying lives at the edge of the abyss, making quick decisions where there was no room for doubt. I learned that time waits for no one, that every story matters, and that the simplest things—a smile, a hand on the shoulder—can be the most powerful.
The Return to Art
When I left that chapter behind, something inside me wanted to return to the essential: art. I returned to graphic design with a more sensitive and nuanced perspective. It was no longer just about creating something beautiful, but about telling visual stories that speak to the most intimate emotions. Every project is an exploration: playing with colours, lines, empty spaces—always searching for meaning that goes beyond the surface. I get excited about creating pieces that are not only seen, but felt.
Many Languages of Creativity
But my creativity doesn’t live in just one place. I write because there are things I don’t know how to say any other way. I paint to give shape to what words can’t quite capture. I dance because my body also has stories to tell. And I photograph as if I could trap time and preserve those moments that would otherwise fade away. For me, each of these expressions is a reflection of who I am—a puzzle of emotions, memories, and dreams.
My Essence
I deeply believe that creating is a way to resist forgetting. It is my way of leaving a mark, of celebrating the beauty hidden in everyday details, and of reminding the world—and myself—that every story deserves to be told with passion, authenticity, and a touch of magic.
